This year is a very special one. We are celebrating both the 90th anniversary of the publication of Judaism as a Civilization and the 90th birth year of Mel Scult, Kaplan’s biographer. An amazing tidbit: the NYTimes announcement of the publication of this seminal volume came out within days of Mel’s birthdate!!
Mel spoke in New York City at West End Synagogue in May and in early November, he spoke at the Society for the Advancement of Judaism (SAJ). Kaplan Center board member, Rabbi Dennis Sasso, also delivered a tish at SAJ, “Coming to Terms: Reflections on the Tower of Babel,” considering how the ancient story impacts on the ways we speak as Jews and as Reconstructionists about things that matter.
The culmination of our celebration will be this webinar honoring Mel on Sunday, December 8 at 1pm EST. It will be wonderful! We’re putting together a tribute book for Mel, and contributors will receive an online flip book. We welcome both your donations and your well-wishes for Mel.
Both of these milestones will be the focus of our major fundraising for this year – to ensure the same quality of programming for the 2025-6 as we have had in past years and will be having this coming year.
